Kresser Craig Advertising

Los Angeles, California

Vice President, Media Strategist

While most would leave off short-timer positions, it is important to see how far ahead of her time Julie  was.  She joined this hot agency after inventing and selling the position of "Media Strategist".  They listened to her proposal and couldn't wait to get her in (she thought they were great too).

Julie's goal was to be on the forefront in two arenas, 1) to provide strategic advantages, "top-spin"  to media plans, media buys and new business pitches and 2) to prepare  and take clients to Eastern Europe,  with the wall coming down.

Why a short timer?  The agency was not ready for Julie's talent, instead functionally using her as an AMD, a position she did not want to step backwards to.  She'd say "to grow, you go.  Learning where you can learn, this is one of the secrets to leadership and happiness in business."

Telmar Information Services, Inc.

Los Angeles, California

Vice President, Western Operations

Leading provider of on-line and micro-based media planning software solutions, offering full integration with National syndicated databases.

(Aside-a  time before "internet", before hard drives, when excitement was moving from card-column-punch and paper tapes to a Fax Machine, and from dumb terminals to PCs .  It was  way cool!  When asking Julie about this position she said "This may have been the single most important job I've ever had. Stan (the owner) let me make some expensive mistakes and allowed me the room to be creative, to learn and to grow. Not to mention that he is a very special quality human being. I still try and see him when I go the NY. You know, upon reflection it was at Telmar that I fell in love with data application and utilization, and dare I say, computers."

It was at Telmar when Julie ceased the opportunity to create, invite participates and finally get off the ground, The Media Research Council-A Voice of the West.  To Julie and the other founding members credit ,this legacy lives on with a growing membership and a strong base. )

  • Responsible for managing staff in six branch offices of  international media/market research firm.

  • Accountable for all marketing, sales, and service activities across 27 Western states, for six product lines ranging from database subscriptions to on-line and PC-based software products.

  • Involved with “hands-on” capability in marketing, financial forecasting, sales, service, training and promotion.

  • Recipient of the 1988 Outstanding Management Performance Award.

  • Responsible for the turning around, building and maintaining of the most profitable division of the company. (Honored at Company's Christmas Party.)

  • Successfully designed and implemented Customer Support Policy, minimized paper handling and facilitated introduction of new customer services that increased demand while providing additional revenue. (Database marketing in action...working, profitable.)

  • Instituted standardized operating procedures for sales and service divisions.

  • Created training program for sales and service personnel which  yielded not only product knowledge, but also successfully encouraged involvement in goals, objectives and decisions.

Response Technologies, Inc.

Redondo Beach, California

Corporate Headquarters

Media/Marketing Director

Full-Service national Direct Response advertising agency.

(An important choice with vision into the future. Julie believed that "direct response" was going to be the rage in the future. She used to say "all media will need to be accountable and connect the dots from ad impact to point-of-purchase to the buyer. From there loyalty can be nurtured").

  • Directed all Media Department functions in this full-service Direct Response advertising agency including planning, buying, sales   analysis (CPL/CPC), research  and administration.

  • Responsible for setting strategic and tactical media directions for clients ensuring effective implementation.

  • Accounts handled were primarily retail (including multi-distributor such as Craftmatic Adjustable Beds, Contour Lounge Chairs, Fredrick's of Hollywood, Royal Palm Ranch Properties, Mojo Windows, AARP, to name a few) and real estate, requiring rapid response to the changing marketplace.

  • Responsible for the growth and development of the media department, providing guidance and training while increasing staff, client base and profitability.

  • Established goals and reported to clients on budget, media activity, lead generation, and analysis of sales and advertising via response tracking and telemarketing/media integration.

  • Skilled in heavy television and print space negotiations.

Prior Experience

  1977-1983

Held various positions of increasing responsibility within the advertising industry including: agency Account Executive (DDB, CLO), Media Planner/Buyer (Grey Advertising, Y&R, Asher/Gould, FCB, ICG and MBS) and Sales Executive for Television Representative Firms (Katz Communications and Blair Television).
